How will I benefit from enrolling in The Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Management Program?
If you want to learn about the business of science, the CEM program will teach you how to protect your IP, think creatively about marketing your developments, and manage your new venture and finances.
What is a Certificate? Do I get academic credit for this program?
The courses are designed for graduate students and professionals – the work is challenging, but is not intended to replace your academic program. We encourage you to list the certificate on your resume or CV; however, the certificate is not listed on your official transcript from the University of Illinois.
What are the educational requirements for admission?
If you have completed a bachelor’s degree, you are eligible for the program. Spaces are reserved for Illinois graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and professionals working in the sciences and engineering fields.
Who is teaching CEM?
Nationally recognized experts in business and law,along with guest speakers teach the modules.
What are the course requirements?
Each course involves lecture and discussion. Experiential learning sessions include activities leading up to writing your business plan. Participants are expected to contribute to group projects and general discussion, and you are required to attend the business lectures and the experiential learning sessions throughout the semester.
How will I pay for the program? Do you accept credit card, UI account or check?
Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to offer a few scholarships for the program. If you are working, check with your employer regarding tuition benefits. We accept major credit cards, debit cards, checks (payable to University of Illinois). Please apply online to pay by credit card or debit card. If needed, individuals can arrange a payment plan.
How do I apply for the CEM program? When is the deadline?
Please apply online. Application and payment deadline is January 15, 2012. Consider applying soon, space is limited.
How many hours, on average, are required on a weekly basis?
Plan on committing an average of 4-6 hours per week.
Is the CEM Program offered annually?
The 2012 CEM program begins January 21, 2012, and is offered annually.
Do I need reference letters from my advisor or my employer?
We are interested in learning about your ideas and your plans for future business ventures, so we encourage you to give careful thought to your interest statement (a one paragraph statement stating why you would like to enroll in CEM). We encourage you to talk with your advisor about participating in the program.
Are scholarships provided? What is the scholarship application process?
The program provides a few scholarships for the CEM program. Please apply online and complete the scholarship application. Omit your tuition payment until scholarship recipients have been confirmed. Scholarship amounts up to 50% of the tuition for the course will be granted. Deadline for scholarship application is December 15, 2011.
Are internships available? What companies/industries offer internships?
Internships are available upon request. Please apply online and complete the internship application. Deadline for internship application is: March 1, 2012.
What is the timeframe of the CEM program?
The CEM program runs from January through April. The total amount of class time is about 60 hours. Lectures on Business Fundamentals are held on Tuesday evenings and the Kauffman Foundation FastTrac TechVenture sessions are held on Saturday mornings.
