Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Overtime Rule

June 29, 2016

The Department of Labor recently issued changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act effective December 1, 2016 which could entitle Post Doc employees and AP employees whose annual salaries fall below $ 47,476 to be eligible for overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.

In response to the changes to the FLSA overtime rule, the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology has made arrangements with Academic Human Resources to provide an informational session to inform IGB faculty members and researchers regarding the implications and procedures related to this new FLSA overtime rule.

The informational session will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 10am to 11am in Conference Center 612 of the IGB.

In the meantime, the IGB Human Resources Office has compiled a list of IGB Post Docs and AP employees whose current annual salaries fall below the new December 1, 2016 salary threshold of $ 47,476.  Please feel free to contact the IGB Human Resources Office if you are uncertain as to whether the salary of one of your current Post Doc or AP employees falls below the new salary threshold of $ 47,476.

From a strategy standpoint, we are advising faculty members and researchers to begin budgeting salaries on their grant proposals for new Post Docs and AP employees to at least meet the new salary threshold of $ 47,476.

Actions for current employees will be developed collaboratively by campus HR and the units, and will be implemented prior to the December 1, 2016 effective date of this new policy.

Please contact the IGB Human Resources office at hr@igb.illinois.edu if you have any questions or concerns regarding this new FLSA policy.  We will try to address any questions or concerns that you may have as best we can while we are still awaiting guidance from Campus HR on the implications and implementation of this new FLSA Overtime Rule.
