Billions of chickens are raised in the United States each year. The padded skin on the underside of a chicken’s foot is covered with small bumpy scales; these scales can become inflamed and infected. Images like this one allow researchers to study the structure of the chicken’s footpad in greater detail and discover nutritional strategies to prevent and reverse this type of disease.
