Glenn Fried, Director, PhD: "Core Facilities provide access to instrumentation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We train approximately 350 users per year." Your resource for: light microscopy, image analysis, and analytical instrumentation. Mayandi (Shiv) Sivguru, Microscopy Facility Manager, PhD: "Train the person on the machine by explaining what this machine can do for him or her. Then they will come and use and then we don't stop there. We also interpret, help people interpret the results that they get from the machines. Then we also provide top-notch computer equipment and world-class software to analyze their 3D data." Donna Epps, Research Specialist, Life Sciences: "I train people to cut their own samples. This is a 24/7 access building so if they want to come in here evenings of weekends to get their stuff cut, they can do that." Mayandi (Shiv) Sivguru: "We have a confocal two photon laser scanning microscope, like the one you see in the back, it's one of the world-class machines. The laser was the first 70 femtosecond laser shipped out of spectraphysics when we bought this. This machine can handle most of, and is one of the main instruments available right now working on this campus." Core facilities in an extension of your lab. Glenn Fried: "Once they are trained, we encourage them to view the core facilites as an extension of their lab." We offer: optical microscopy, sample processing, analytical software, cameras, and micro-fabrication. Carly Hill, Graduate Student, Department of Geology: "The first attraction to core facilities was the instruments and the high, high resolution that we were getting from using the microscopes. And the image analysis, which allowed us to quantify those observations, but what's really a huge attribute for core facilities is the people. With my project at least Glenn and Shiv they really jumped in and they started making suggestions, things that are out of my realm of expertise, and they started suggesting different techniques and different microscopes and that really helped us out a lot." Glenn Fried: "The core facilities is open to everyone on campus. About 40% of our users are not IGB affiliated. We have everyone from the engineering side of campus all the way down to vet med come here and we're sort of centrally located so we can help all of those people." Core facilities is open to IGB researchers and the campus community. We have 400+ users annually, encourage innovation, and help you achieve your goals.
