Gene Robinson featured in latest “Science Nation” video by NSF

This week’s Science Nation video, produced by the NSF, features work from the laboratory of entomologist and IGB Director Gene Robinson.  The video, entitled “No Leader?  Now What?” highlights efforts in Robinson’s lab to develop an automated system that records, detects and quantifies the social interactions among bees within a hive.  The data yielded by this technology are being used to strengthen our understanding of network dynamics in many complex systems.  The ability to obtain detailed knowledge of the social network within the hive will also pave the way for genomic studies that explore the biological basis for honey bee “personality”—individual differences in the ways that bees perform tasks and interact with each other.
