About Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology

These programs have been designed to expose academics to fundamental business methodologies including creating a business plan, managing intellectual property, overseeing finances, marketing and customer discovery, and other skills essential for entrepreneurial ventures.

This program consists of both a lecture series on entrepreneurial fundamentals as well as a hands on learning experience currently being designed in conjunction with the Technology Entrepreneur Center, Office of Technology Management, and College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Entrepreneurship Lecture Series

This lecture series was created to inform academics and professionals in the life sciences, engineering, technology and other related disciplines about the business, economic and legal issues within the lab and scientific start-up ventures. Participants will also be introduced to the Illinois campus entrepreneurship community and other available resources.

The lecturers for this series were chosen to introduce academics and professionals to business, entrepreneurship and innovation fundamentals with topics including:

  • Managing intellectual property and patents
  • Determining market opportunities and defining the target customers
  • Developing a business and marketing plan
  • Managing finances and securing funding

The lecturers are knowledgeable experts in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign entrepreneurship community. They have an in depth understanding of all aspects in starting and growing a sustainable business.
