Abstract

Genome sequencing stimulated by the Human Genome Initiative has resulted in many model organisms being selected for draft and low genome coverage. Selection of organisms by the NIH has recently been determined by evolutionary distances from man to support genome annotation. Other animal species thus must develop NIH independent approaches for creating the template for sequencing and identifying the resources to support the sequencing initiative. The Swine Genome Sequencing Consortium (SGSC) was organized to link various international efforts to develop an integrated approach for sequencing the pig genome (6X). A Case Study providing the strategy and results of this SGSC approach will be presented. This Case Study will demonstrate how through the development of a shared international vision and the integration of data from competing investigators has led to a successful initiative. This approach has also permitted international funding agencies to target specific aspects of the project and ensure no redundancies while capturing the synergies of relevant technical expertise (This work was supported in part by USDA/NRI-CSREES grant AG2001-35205-11698 and USDA-ARS AG58-5438-2-313).
