We identify cutting-edge computational technologies for genomics research with the potential for broad impact across the IGB’s diverse scientific portfolio. We then develop targeted cross-disciplinary programs to help spark new ideas by lowering barriers to experimentation. Working closely with other IGB offices, we implement infrastructure, provide training, establish community, and seed cross-disciplinary collaborations to enable IGB scientists to explore, apply, and advance these new technologies to accelerate discovery and open up new avenues of research.

AI and Genomics
Powerful artificial intelligence tools are opening new doors for genomics research. We are establishing the following programs to accelerate AI at the IGB.
Infrastructure
We are working with the IGB's Computer and Network Resource Group to deploy popular AI tools on Biocluster, along with tutorials for their use. Search the Biocluster Wiki to see if a tool has been deployed, or contact us with requests. Our goal is to enable researchers to quickly experiment with a curated set of useful computational methods.

In partnership with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, we offered a 3-day introductory workshop designed to provide hands-on experience in getting started with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The program featured practical exercises and real-world examples, with a special focus on applications relevant to a wide range of biological problems.

Spatial omics technologies can provide spatially resolved high-throughput genomic information in intact tissues and samples. The Spatial Omics Initiative aims to advance research in this area at the University of Illinois.

New complex questions in microbial function and ecology are stretching the limits of existing computational analytical tools. The Microbial Genomics Working Group aims to bring together microbiologists and computational scientists to address this gap.

The focus this semester will be on pan-genomics-type methods for handling the extreme diversity of microbial genomes. Trainees are encouraged to attend, give talks, meet other trainees from different backgrounds, and help kickstart collaborations!
