In this activity students will take leaves (that they collect themselves or collected before hand) and place them in a heat resistant container (beaker). An adult will add boiling water to the heat resistant container to break down enzymes that would degrade the chlorophyll. After 1 minute the leaves are removed from the water and students cut them into small pieces. These pieces are then placed in a clear tube/container and ethanol is added. Students will then shake the tube to facilitate the extraction of the chlorophyll. Chlorophyll will leak into the ethanol turning it green. Students are then asked to think about the process and answer questions.
