33: Cryogen Safety

The volume expansion ratio of liquid nitrogen to gaseous nitrogen is about 1:700. It is easy to become asphyxiated and become unconscious if working in a room with insufficient ventilation where nitrogen gas is being generated. Be sure to work in well ventilated space.

The boiling point of nitrogen is lower than that of oxygen, making it easy to condense liquid oxygen unintentionally. Liquid oxygen unintentionally mixed with organics has been the cause of many laboratory fires and explosions.
