The distinct blue lines in this image are the walls of cells that make up vascular bundles, the tubes that carry water, sugar and nutrients between the roots and the leaves of plants. By counting the number of vascular bundles in the stalks of sorghum plants and measuring their size, researchers can quantify important differences in genetically distinct lines of crop plants.
