Genome Day returns on November 12, 2016

BY Kathryne Metcalf.

Genome Day is nearly here! Join us on November 12, 2016 at the Orpheum Children’s Museum to celebrate the event’s fifth year as we invite the community to come learn about DNA, genes, genomes, and evolution in an approachable manner for all ages.

Genome Day is nearly here! Join us at the Orpheum Children’s Museum to learn about DNA, genes, genomes, and evolution in an approachable manner for all ages.

While primarily intended for children in grades K-4, all members of the community are welcome and will benefit from the day. Exhibits and activities will be designed to present the environment, energy use and production, health, technology and fundamental research at the IGB.

We are proud to announce that this year's Genome Day will again be presented in Spanish as well as English, with each activity being manned by volunteers presenting in both languages. Our thanks to the members of the UIUC chapter of SACNAS (Society Devoted to Advancing Hispanics, Chicanos & Native Americans in Science) for their kind help!

As part of the outreach mission of the IGB to promote activities and undertake projects targeted to engage K-12 students as well as the east-central Illinois community with the University of Illinois, events such as Genome Day strive to present the key concepts of the research taking place at the IGB.

Last year we saw over 400 attendees participate in the 18 different activities, such as building DNA and seeing how it’s packaged within the cell with candy, learning how organisms relate to each other on the Tree of Life, and extracting strawberry DNA to make necklaces. This year, favorite activities from previous events will return, as well as new ones that represent the IGB’s evolving research portfolio.
