Virtual Machines

This IGB Virtual Machine (VM) service is a service provided by CNRG.

The VM service enables users to share the cost of operating a computer system, thereby reducing their out-of-pocket expenses to a fraction of what they would be otherwise. When using a VM, CNRG allows users to get full control over the virtual system they create, if desired, giving them the freedom to make changes to the system as they see fit.

The VM service functions under a cost recovery model. The intent is to replace the hardware every five years and recover funding for the administration (10% FTE at full usage) of the service.

Cost and Billing

Currently, VMs are billed on a yearly basis, but as the service matures, we will be moving to a monthly fee.

Item Cost Minimum Maximum
CPU $241.39 1 8
RAM $22.64 2GB 16GB
Disk $0.46 100GB 8000GB

Example Bill for VM with 1 CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 100GB disk of space:

  • 241.39+(2x22.64)+(100x0.46)=$332.67 per year

Supported Operating Systems

With the VM service, users can get support for current versions of RedHat/Rocky, Debian, and Windows systems.

Networking

All systems in the VM service share a single 10Gbps connection.  As a result, VM systems should not be used for systems with regularly intensive network needs.

Backups

VMs can be backed up via the server backup system upon user request.  By default, VMs are not backed up.

Alternatives

The main difference between the VM services provided by the IGB and those provided below is the basic level of service that is included with the IGB.  For the services below, the IGB and campus do not provide any real support for individual VMs.
