Community-wide collaborative art piece features locally foraged flora and fauna

Did you ever collect something from nature as a kid, preserving it to recall cherished memories later in time? Capturing the beauty and wonder of the natural world through foraged finds is the mission of Cris Hughes (GSP), a local artist and Clinical Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Hughes’ art showcases 3D botanical compositions created from dried specimens of plants and insects foraged from nature.

Since the inception of the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, its slogan has been “where science meets society.” This highlights the institute’s deep commitment both past and present to communicate the research and discoveries happening at the IGB with the public, and promote scientific thinking to encourage a new diverse generation of scientists and science-informed citizens. “We established a comprehensive outreach program within a few years of opening the IGB, for several reasons,” said IGB Director Gene Robinson (GNDP).

Woese Institute for Genomic Biology located at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The exhibition will be on display through January 2023 at the Keck Center of the National Academies in Washington, D.C., and is available to the public through appointment only.

The exhibition comprises images from research addressing significant problems in the environment, medicine, and energy use and production. Images are selected to highlight the beauty and fascination encountered daily in scientific endeavors.
