Join us for a workshop with Jeni Cross, PhD, Director of the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRISS) and Professor of Sociology at Colorado State University.

Workshop: Hidden Networks and Team Performance
How can teams harness the power social networks to improve team performance? Social ties—communication, friendship, advise, and mentoring—contribute to team performance. However, these ties are often invisible and form different patterns of connection than supervisory networks or formal scientific collaboration ties. Come explore your own scientific collaboration network and discuss the oft hidden social strategies for creating high performing teams.

Objectives:

  • Distinguish between different types of social ties (instrumental and expressive)
  • Discover the variety of social ties in your personal scientific collaboration network
  • Explore how the rules of interaction create networks, and shape the potential of networks to create and innovate
  • Create one action goal that you (anyone on your team) can implement to improve team performance
