Training

Who needs to take the online safety training?

Researchers are required to take the Division of Research Safety Online General Laboratory Safety Training, the Division of Research Safety Online Understanding Biosafety Training, and the lab workers who are performing research.

All IGB support staff are required to take the IGB support staff safety training, which includes information regarding severe weather emergencies, fire alarm system, areas of rescue assistance, Illini Alert, and building evacuation plans.

Users of the Core Facilities only who are not also working in the IGB are required to take the Division of Research Safety Online General Laboratory Safety Training, and the Division of Research Safety Online Understanding Biosafety Training.

Faculty are not required to take the online safety training, but are strongly encouraged to review minimally the training slides for researchers, as this training includes a lot of building safety information and the IGB-specific requirements. The Division of Research Safety Online General Laboratory Safety Training provides general lab safety information and some campus safety policies and procedures. The Division of Research Safety Online Understanding Biosafety defines a broader scope of safe practices, administrative procedures, protective equipment, and facility design to eliminate or reduce exposure to biohazardous organisms and their products.

Note: Those who need to take the DRS online General Laboratory Safety Training, DRS Understanding Biosafety, IGB training for lab workers who are performing research, and IGB support staff safety training need to print out hard copies of the certificates or email certificates (pdf) to Kathy Millage at kmillage@igb.illinois.edu to get IGB keys or key card access. If you have already taken the DRS exams, you can go to the DRS website to access the certificates without retaking the exams.
